GLENELG HIGH SCHOOL DANCE-DRILL TEAM
The Glenelg High School Dance Drill Team is an exceptionally talented and successful group of 9th through 12th grade students. Started in the early 1970.s as part of the Glenelg Marching Unit Front, this group has evolved from a school-spirit based organization to a top-level competitive dance team. Our dancers are proud to claim 23 MAPDA Maryland State Titles, 6 Atlantic Cheer & Dance Company National Titles, and 3 Coastal Dance National Titles! Additionally, the Team has achieved over 22 straight-years of Superior Ratings and First Place Awards at national-level music festivals! The members work hard year-round to achieve the highest degree of excellence possible. The typical year starts with auditions in April, followed by attending a Universal Dance Association dance camp in early July. Preparations for football performances start in late August, and competition season is in full swing by the beginning of November! State, regional, and national level contests occur in January, February and March; and the year comes to a thrilling close as the Team joins the Marching Unit on the annual Spring Trip! The level of commitment required by the members is great, but the level of success they achieve makes it worth every second of their time! The dancers develop not only dance skills, but also real-world skills and friendships that last a lifetime! We are pleased to report that our members have gone on to dance on the college level with the University of Maryland, Towson University, University of Dayton, University of Delaware, St. Mary.s College, Loyola University, and East Carolina University. They have also become Redskinettes, Baltimore Raven.s Dancers and staff members for the Eastern Dance Association.

These newest championship titles bring the Team.s total to 23 and mark the 12th straight year of earning this award! This amazing feat is combined with the success the dancers enjoyed by qualifying routines in four performance categories.Jazz, Kick, Hip Hop, and Prop. The Team, lead by Captains Mary M. and Liz R., and Co-Captain Lexie S., performed routines that were truly creative and original. They are especially proud to claim responsibility for the choreography of all four routines! The Jazz routine was truly unforgettable, performed to the music Navy Taxi! The Kick routine displayed a combination of Bollywood dance styles done to a driving ethnic beat which was a nice change-of-pace from the traditional kick line. The Prop routine was a mix of dance and drama centering around a theme of homeless dancers. It is amazing what you can do with trashcans, newspaper, and cardboard boxes!
22 YEARS OF SUPERIOR RATINGS! Congratulations to the 2008-2009
Team for continuing this amazing streak! Each spring the Team joins the entire
Marching Unit in an adjudicated music festival. The dancers support the Band
in the Parade competition and then compete in the auxiliary event. We are
proud to report that both categories earned 1st Place awards and Superior Ratings! Most satisfying for the Team
is that they performed for their Unit peers with the same level of excellence
as they showed at Championships! GOODBYE, SENIORS! It.s time once again to watch our beloved senior dancers graduate and go off into their exciting futures. Mary, Liz, Lexie, Sonia and Ariel: we will miss you! Please know that each one of you has made a contribution that will affect the team forever. You always have a special place in our hearts and we hope that you will keep in touch! Keep dancing and may you be blessed with every happiness on earth!
