GLENELG HIGH SCHOOL DANCE-DRILL TEAM

2009/2010 Dance Team

The Glenelg High School Dance Drill Team is an exceptionally talented and successful group of 9th through 12th grade students. Started in the early 1970s as part of the Glenelg Marching Unit Front, this group has evolved from a school-spirit based organization to a top-level competitive dance team. Our dancers are proud to claim 24 MAPDA Maryland State Titles, 6 Atlantic Cheer & Dance Company National Titles, and 3 Coastal Dance National Titles! Additionally, the

Team has achieved over 23 straight-years of Superior Ratings and First Place Awards at national-level music festivals!

The members work hard year-round to achieve the highest degree of excellence possible. The typical year starts with auditions in April, followed by attending a Universal Dance Association dance camp in early July. Preparations for football performances start in late August, and competition season is in full swing by the beginning of November! State, regional, and national level contests occur in January, February and March; and the year comes to a thrilling close as the Team joins the Marching Unit on the annual Spring Trip! The level of commitment required by the members is great, but the level of success they achieve makes it worth every second of their time! The dancers develop not only dance skills, but also real-world skills and friendships that last a lifetime! We are pleased to report that our members have gone on to dance on the college level with the University of Maryland, Towson University, University of Dayton, University of Delaware, St. Marys College, Loyola University, and East Carolina University. They have also become Redskinettes, Baltimore Ravens Dancers and staff members for the Eastern Dance Association.

Team News:

CONGRATULATIONS to the 2009-2010 TeamMAPDA Maryland State Prop Champions! This newest championship title brings the Teams total to 24 and marks the13th straight year of earning this award! This amazing feat is combined with the success the dancers enjoyed by qualifying routines in three Division 1 performance categoriesLyrical, Pom, and Prop.

The Team, lead by Co-Captains Molly and Marina, and Line Officers Anna and Rachel, performed routines that were truly creative and original. They are especially proud to claim responsibility for the choreography of all three routines! The Prop routine was truly unforgettable, performed to the music from Disneys Beauty and the Beast! Not only did our dancers dance and manipulate props, they sang and served the judges rose-topped cupcakes! The entire team had the exciting opportunity to participate in the Spring Musical of Beauty and the Beast, as well. The team really put a lot of creative energy and hard work into the Pom routine, which was the first time in 3 years that this category was entered. They are very proud of the 3rd Place Award that this routine earned because the competition was the toughest and most technical the team has ever faced! The Lyrical routine challenged the team on a technical level, as well as a performance level. Typically, a lyrical routine is done to music that is slow and gentle. This years music was deceptively fast-paced with sharp accent points. The performance was deemed very competitive and was well received by the judges and audience!

23 YEARS OF SUPERIOR RATINGS! Congratulations to the 2009-2010 Team for continuing this amazing streak! Each spring the Team joins the entire Marching Unit in an adjudicated music festival. The dancers support the Band in the Parade competition and then compete in the auxiliary event. We are proud to report that both categories earned 1st Place awards and Superior Ratings! Most satisfying for the Team is that they performed for their Unit peers with the same level of excellence as they showed at Championships!

GOODBYE, TO OUR ONE AND ONLY SENIOR! Its time once again to watch our beloved senior dancers graduate and go off into their exciting futures. This year, we will say "Auf Wiedersehen" to Ingrid, our only senior who not only contributed her skills to our team; she was also a valued Captain of the Silks Squad! Please know that you have made a contribution that will affect the team forever. You always have a special place in our hearts and we hope that you will keep in touch! Keep dancing and may you be blessed with every happiness on earth!
